Reassessing Security In The South Caucasus

by Annie Jafalian, Reassessing Security In The South Caucasus Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Reassessing Security In The South Caucasus books, Lying on the periphery of Europe, Russia, Turkey and Iran, and also being of interest to the United States, the South Caucasus is receiving growing attention among decision-makers and scholars of international relations. From a European perspective, the region is now forming a neighbouring area at the border of the Black Sea, as well as a corridor of oil and gas imports whose stability has become part of European security itself. As such, this volume reassesses security in the South Caucasus. It makes it possible to update analysis on security interests, perceptions and policies at national, regional and international levels through cross-national studies. Aimed at highlighting long-term defence and security trends in the region, contributors re-examine their relevance and enduring impact. They also identify changing dynamics under recent geopolitical and political developments in and around the region such as: the enlargements of NATO, the August 2008 Russia-Georgia war, the creation of the EU Eastern Partnership or Presidential elections. One of this volume's distinct contributions is that chapters have been written by experts from inside and around the region, i.e. Armenia, Georgia, Russia and Turkey, with other important contributions provided by authors from France and Canada having extensive experience in the area. Students and scholars of post-Soviet states, Eurasian geopolitics and European Security will find this volume enlightening.

The Transcaucasus In Transition

by Shireen Hunter, The Transcaucasus In Transition Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Transcaucasus In Transition books, Since this book was completed in mid-1994 there have been a number of significant developments in the Transcaucasus and its immediate neighbourhood. Surat Husseinov has been ousted from power in Azerbaijan. The government in Armenia has clamped down harshly on the Dashnaks. The Chechen crisis erupted, forcing Russia to focus even more attention on what was happening across its southern borders. The debate about the route or routes along which Azeri oil should be piped to the West has also become more heated. In spite of the pace of events in the Transcaucasus Hunter has written a book which should enjoy a long shelf-life. The reader is able to gain a clear understanding of what occurred in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia in the final years of the Gorbachev era and in the first years of these states' independence after 1991. This background knowledge will enable the reader to make more sense of the most recent complicated twists and turns in the politics of the Transcaucasus region. -- From http://www.jstor.org (Sep. 15, 2013).

Russian Nationalism Foreign Policy And Identity Debates In Putin S Russia

by Marlene, Russian Nationalism Foreign Policy And Identity Debates In Putin S Russia Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Russian Nationalism Foreign Policy And Identity Debates In Putin S Russia books, The contributors to this book discuss the new conjunctions that have emerged between foreign policy events and politicized expressions of Russian nationalism since 2005. The 2008 war with Georgia, as well as conflicts with Ukraine and other East European countries over the memory of the Soviet Union, and the Russian interpretation of the 2005 French riots have all contributed to reinforcing narratives of Russia as a fortress surrounded by aggressive forces, in the West and CIS. This narrative has found support not only in state structures, but also within the larger public. It has been especially salient for some nationalist youth movements, including both pro-Kremlin organizations, such as "Nashi," and extra-systemic groups, such as those of the skinheads. These various actors each have their own specific agendas; they employ different modes of public action, and receive unequal recognition from other segments of society. Yet many of them expose a reading of certain foreign policy events which is roughly similar to that of various state structures. These and related phenomena are analyzed, interpreted and contextualized in papers by Luke March, Igor Torbakov, Jussi Lassila, Marlène Laruelle, and Lukasz Jurczyszyn.
